Australian citizens facing problem gambling will soon have the opportunity to exclude themselves from betting on sports and racing events through the national self-exclusion register. The launch of BetStop by the Australian Government on August 21, 2023, aims to provide problem gamblers with the ability to discontinue their betting activities.
The BetStop program will involve interactive sportsbooks and racebooks, as well as Internet and mobile gambling operations, to promote the self-exclusion register. According to Nerida O’Loughlin, the Chair of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), BetStop will play a crucial role in addressing problem gambling and helping individuals change their gambling habits.
O’Loughlin emphasized that BetStop will allow individuals at risk of gambling harm to take control of their situation and block themselves from all licensed online and phone wagering services, thereby addressing problem gambling. The gambling industry is expected to support the initiative by updating its systems and procedures to protect customers and encourage them to use BetStop as a guide to abandon problem gambling activities.
The new legislation will enable gamblers to exclude themselves from placing new bets, creating new accounts, and receiving marketing messages for at least three months. This self-exclusion option will be applicable across all Australian licensed online and mobile wagering operations, with measures in place to ensure the effectiveness of the bettors’ self-exclusions over the specified period.
Problem gamblers will have the choice of a three-month exclusion or a lifetime exclusion, allowing for a personalized approach to addressing problem gambling behavior. The launch of BetStop represents a crucial step in providing individuals with the tools to make positive changes in their gambling habits.
The national self-exclusion register, BetStop, is set to launch on August 21, 2023, and will offer free services while ensuring the protection of personal details. This initiative aims to provide problem gamblers with the support and tools they need to address their gambling habits effectively.
